Originally constructed in the 19th century as a residence for a French diplomat, it had opened as a hotel by the time of the international period. At the time it was one of the most exclusive and luxurious hotels anywhere, visited by royalty and celebrities. Henri Matisse painted Landscape seen from a window from a room in the hotel. Restoration on the hotel started in 2008 and it reopened in the summer of 2014. There are 58 rooms and suites, and the hotel accommodates approximately 200 guests. Room 35 where Matisse painted is now a museum.
